Staff Profiles

John Bibby  – Senior Parts Technician

Back in 1963 John started working at Sharrocks, a local tractor dealership, in the parts department. John Bibby said, “When I set off on that three-mile bike ride in the pouring rain for my interview all those years ago, I had no idea that I would get the job on a month’s trial and still be on it 54 years later!”

John successfully worked at Sharrocks for 40 years, gaining an unparalleled knowledge of tractors and the associated spare parts. When Clarke and Pulman Ltd opened their door in 2003, Ged Clarke wanted John, with his vast experience, to set up the parts department. John, alongside another colleague, worked from nothing to set up machinery franchises and accounts with the dozens of manufacturers needed to establish a comprehensive supply of spare parts. The company now has over 200 suppliers. They also set up a computerised stock control system and a large showroom. The business grew and grew as as did the complexity of the spare parts industry. Everything now has a serial number making identification more complicated and even more so with the constant advances in tractor technology and machinery. John commented, ‘The advising about, and the supplying of, spare parts is a testing job and requires a very dedicated and patient person.”

Ged Clarke, Managing Director, added, “What John doesn’t know about spare parts isn’t worth knowing. The knowledge he has in his head is immeasurable and we are slowly trying to download it to our hard drive – but until that’s done we wont let him retire!”

Chris Parr – Service Manager

Chris spent his two week’s work experience from school at Clarke and Pullman, and then returned to work for them full time after his GCSE’s in July 2005. He was the first in the company to go through the company’s apprenticeship programme in association with AGCO, a global farm machinery manufacturer, and Warwickshire College, a leading land-based training and education provider. Chris received his on the job training with John Horrocks, who was the senior technician at the time, and spent eight years out in the van servicing and repairing Massey Ferguson and Fendt tractors along with combine harvesters, balers and dryers. After John moved to the sales department, Chris got his own van, and as a newly appointed senior technician went out solo. During this time Chris has also successfully guided other apprentices through their training and is now the manager of the whole service department at the age of 28.

Chris said, “When I did my work experience here when I was 15 I had no idea that I would have the chance to progress to become service manager. I’ve enjoyed every part of working my way through the company and learning on the job and have felt supported and believed in all the way through, Clarke and Pulman Ltd really is a great place to work.’

Ged Clarke, Managing Director, added, “We saw Chris’s potential from the off, he had the desire to learn and the ‘can do’ attitude which is essential in our business. We are proud of what Chris has achieved at our company and that he is now able to pass on his knowledge and experience to others joining the company either as a technician or an apprentice.”
